Alameda Corridor authority green lights shuttle train demo, inland truck depot (2/8/2005)

Last month, the Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority's (ACTA) board authorized the agency to begin implementing a shuttle train demonstration project designed to increase the use of rail facilities to move goods in and out of Los Angeles-area ports and reduce highway congestion.

The board also approved the development of an inland truck depot to reduce truck congestion at the ports of L.A. and Long Beach, store some of the cargo handled by shuttle trains and temporarily stage containers arriving at the ports during expanded hours for next-day delivery to southern California distribution centers. The ports plan to extend their hours of operation to reduce truck traffic during peak driving times.

"Adding the inland truck depot will only enhance overall efforts to make the critical investments our region needs to keep up with current and future cargo demands on southern California's trade network," said ACTA Vice Chairman Frank Colonna in a prepared statement.
