Yesterday, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Mexico’s Secretary of Communications and Transportation Juan Molinar met in Monterrey, Mexico, to discuss a range of cross-border transportation issues and review the nations’ transportation relationship.

Both officials agreed it’s vital the nations cooperate on policies of mutual interest to ensure the safety, reliability, efficiency and sustainability of each country’s transportation system. For example, LaHood and Molinar believe transportation infrastructure projects in the border region play a critical role in sustaining a mutually important trade relationship, according to a prepared statement. The secretaries reviewed the status of existing and planned rail and highway projects in the border region, and reaffirmed their commitment to work jointly with other border stakeholders to ensure coordinated transportation planning.

LaHood and Molinar also discussed the status of motor-carrier issues, such as the establishment of a cross-border trucking program, and aviation safety issues.

Before the meeting ended, the secretaries committed to establishing processes aimed at increasing bilateral transportation cooperation to help stimulate economic growth.
