Canadian Pacific and K+S Potash Canada yesterday announced they signed an exclusive long-term, volume-based contract regarding the transportation of potash products from K+S' new potash mine near Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
Slated to start production in summer 2016, the $4.1 billion facility will be the first new greenfield potash mine built in Saskatchewan in nearly 40 years, K+S Potash officials said in a press release. The mine is projected to produce 2 million tons of potash by 2017's end.
CP will move potash from the mine to a western Canadian port, as well as to domestic Canadian and U.S. markets. In order to accommodate the mine's transportation needs, the Class I plans to build an exclusive rail spur for the facility.
"The capacity, flexibility and market access of CP's network on our western corridor, as well as efficient route options into the United States, ensures a growth opportunity for both companies," said CP President and Chief Operating Officer Keith Creel.
