Late September floods in eastern North Carolina caused by remnants of Tropical Storm Nicole washed out some of North Carolina Railroad Co.’s (NCRR) track and delayed trains. But within 36 hours, trains were rolling again on NCRR’s 317-mile corridor between Charlotte and Morehead City, which is used daily by Amtrak and Norfolk Southern Railway.
Track was washed out between Dover and Havelock and required repairs. NS helped complete the work, according to NCRR officials.
“The tracks were repaired promptly and Norfolk Southern really came through for NCRR and the businesses and military installations that depend upon our line,” said NCRR President Scott Saylor in a prepared statement.
Since 2001, NCRR has spent more than $63 million on capital improvements along the corridor to bolster infrastructure and avoid operational problems, he said. Completed projects include two new bridges between LaGrange and Kinston, six box culverts, and maintenance to rails, ties and surface material. In addition, NCRR and NS have spent a combined $11.5 million during the past four years on bridges and culverts east of Raleigh, said Saylor.
NCRR also has committed $83 million for capital improvements through 2015.
