Today, Canadian Pacific announced it completed first year of infrastructure improvements as part of a three-year plan to upgrade the North Main Line between Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Edmonton, Alberta.
The $250 million infrastructure program involves about 850 miles of track in three provinces and is designed to increase capacity and service reliability for a number of customers, including agricultural, fertilizer and energy producers. The program includes rail and tie upgrades, new and extended sidings, and public grade crossing upgrades. In addition, CP plans to enhance efficiencies at yards in Saskatchewan, such as Bredenbury yard, which will gain increased staging capacity.
This year, the Class I completed work on 155 miles of the North Main Line, helping to increase track speeds and improve asset utilization, CP officials said in a prepared statement.
“Not only will the North Main upgrade increase capacity and raise train speed, it will offer a more direct route for some bulk and intermodal traffic,” said CP Executive Vice President of Operations Mike Franczak, adding that the program provides the railroad flexibility and alternative route options.
