Genesee & Wyoming Inc. and subsidiary St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad (SL&A) were joined July 22 by federal legislators, Maine officials and industry representatives to celebrate the 75,000th container handled at SL&A's Auburn, Maine, intermodal terminal.
The terminal, which was built in 1994 and expanded in 2001 using a combination of public and private funds, was one of the first projects to receive Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) funds. SL&A in 1997 received additional ISTEA funds to remove a New Hampshire overpass, enabling the railroad to offer northern New England's only hi-cube double-stack container route.
"Intermodal facilities, such as this one, allow us to move one step closer to a seamless transportation system, allowing goods to flow quickly and safely both inside and outside of our borders," said Mortimer Fuller III, GWI chairman and chief executive officer, according to a prepared statement.
