Burlington Northern Santa Fe is hosting Global Environmental Management Initiative (GEMI) work group and membership meetings, which conclude today in Fort Worth, Texas.

Members of GEMI, a non-profit organization that promotes environmental, health and safety issues, met Oct. 16-17 to discuss current environmental topics, including governance issues, communication and information management.

"BNSF's environmental vision to 'protect and enhance the environment, to protect the health and safety of employees and the communities in which BNSF operates, and to comply with environment laws and regulations' is very consistent with the goals of GEMI," said Mark Stehly, BNSF assistant vice president, environment, and research and development, in a prepared statement.

GEMI develops environmental programs and publications to promote more progressive policies and best practices.

The organization's members include environmental managers from more than 30 companies, including Con Agra, Dow Chemical Co., DuPont, General Motors Corp., Federal Express, Motorola and BNSF, the only railroad member.
