The Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA) recently approved a concession agreement with Alabama Steel Terminals L.L.C. to develop a new $36 million steel coil handling facility at the authority's main docks complex in Mobile.
To be constructed behind a Pier D2 berth on a 40-foot-deep channel, the facility will be served by rail, trucks and barges. The Port of Mobile's container, general cargo and bulk facilities are served by BNSF Railway Co., CN, CSX Transportation, Kansas City Southern, Norfolk Southern Railway and ASPA's Terminal Railway.
Alabama Steel Terminals — a joint venture between TriState Maritime Services Inc. and the Richardson Group of Cos. — will operate and manage the terminal. The 372,600-square-foot facility will be built in two phases and feature covered and open storage areas for steel coil throughput handling.
The first phase calls for constructing 178,200 square feet of covered bay area and 168,000 square feet of open storage yard space to handle about 650,000 tons of steel annually. The second phase involves the addition of a 194,400-square-foot bay area.
The steel facility will help attract new shippers to the port and complement the port's existing portfolio of steel terminals, said James Lyons, ASPA's director and chief executive.
