BNSF Logistics L.L.C. recently acquired third-party logistics firm Sumark Services, which employs 54 people and earned $40 million in revenue last year. Terms weren't disclosed.

A wholly owned Burlington Northern Santa Fe subsidiary, BNSF Logistics plans to add Sumark's offerings to its Transportation Execution Services (TES) product line. The company named Sumark owner Chuck Borchers director of TES-East.

"[Sumark's] strengths are very complementary to our existing business, and we will provide additional services that will enhance its ability to strengthen customer relationships," said BNSF Logistics Vice President and General Manager Eric Wolfe in a prepared statement.

Meanwhile, BNSF's own logistical performance last year earned an award from Toyota Logistics Services.

The "Excellence in Customer Service Award" recognizes BNSF's efforts to monitor each vehicle shipment daily, proactively notify the automaker of service exceptions and develop a strong commitment to improving service.

Last year, BNSF moved more than 60,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles originating from plants in Cambridge, Ontario; Georgetown, Ky.; Princeton, Ind.; and Fremont, Calif.

BNSF — which previously earned Toyota's "Excellence in On-Time Performance" and "Excellence in Quality" awards — won the customer service award for the first time.
