CN, Conrail begin electronic exchange of price information (January 1996)

Canadian National and Conrail began exchanging railway price information electronically via the Rate EDI Network (REN).

Railway price information is currently shared in the form of printed documents sent by mail or courier, a cumbersome system that is slow, costly and error-prone.

"A Canadian National pricing person can call up and inquire about Conrail prices in the same way they can call up CN prices," says CN's Harry Price. "All of Conrail's prices that we are involved in are here for us to use."

Officials from CN and Contrail hope "all the Class Is will be participating" by the end of 1996, says Conrail's Michael McGilloway.
