Canadian Pacific Railway continues to expand its AC-traction locomotive fleet. In the second quarter, the Class I plans to acquire 41 4,400-horsepower units — through long-term operating leases — from GE Transportation.
"Volumes are strong across virtually all areas of our business and the new locomotives will expand our network capacity to handle this growth," says CP spokesman Len Cocolicchio. The added power also is expected to help the railroad increase grain moves, which have been hampered by winter weather during the first quarter.
Last year, CP acquired 81 AC locomotives from GE Transportation, increasing the railroad's AC fleet to 507. AC units now account for about half of CP's locomotives — the highest fleet proportion of any North American railroad, says Cocolicchio.
