CP's Montreal terminal to adopt 24-hour weekday schedule (5/25/2005)

On June 6, Canadian Pacific Railway will begin operating its Lachine Terminal in Montreal around the clock on weekdays to enable truckers to expand their delivery schedules and have more hours to access their loads. The intermodal terminal will be open from midnight on Sundays to midnight on Fridays.

CP officials consulted with representatives from the Quebec Trucking Association, Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association (CIFFA), I.E. Canada and shippers, who requested longer terminal hours to deal with heavy import volumes moving through the Port of Vancouver.

To improve the terminal’s operations, CP recently increased staffing and added five new toplift machines. The Class I also plans to begin a two-year track expansion project this spring to increase capacity.

“We must change the way we do business if we want to avoid potential gridlock and lengthy delays at rail yards,” said CIFFA Vice President Marc Bibeau in a prepared statement. This is a positive start in expediting container movements, [and] will minimize costs, increase productivity and avoid costly storage charges.”
