On Feb. 27, CSX Transportation named Alan Crown executive vice president and chief operating officer, and W. Michael Cantrell, senior vice president-advanced operations technologies.

A 36-year rail veteran, Crown most recently served as executive vice president-transportation, responsible for safety, service design, and freight and passenger operations. Now, he also will be responsible for engineering and mechanical.

Previously senior vice president of engineering and mechanical, Cantrell now will be responsible for technology innovations designed to improve service and lower costs. Cantrell will report to Crown.

After beginning his career as a yard clerk, Crown has served CSXT as general manager of several operating regions. He led the development of CSXT's Safety Leadership Process, which has resulted in new training and safety practices since its 2002 launch.

In 1996, Cantrell joined CSXT as vice president-mechanical. He previously served Cummins Engine Co. as vice president-manufacturing technology. Cantrell has led the railroad's car and locomotive maintenance programs that improved availability and reliability, helped evaluate and adapt technologies — including locomotive remote controls — and has been a strong Six Sigma supporter.
