Canadian Pacific: From 'Iron Highway' to 'Expressway' service (7/4/1999)

7/4/2023

After more than two years of successful trial runs in the Toronto-Montreal freight corridor, Canadian Pacific Railway's intermodal freight system — formerly known as Iron Highway — has a new name and a renewed financial commitment.

Dubbed "Expressway," the service is designed to work in partnership with truck operators. It reduces truckers' fuel and tractor investment costs, is an effective way to cope with driver shortages by decreasing overnight runs and allows big highway trailers to avoid crowded roads.

New equipment and the construction of three terminals should facilitate full revenue service between Montreal and Toronto, and an extension to Detroit, by year's end, CP officials said.
