Canadian Pacific Railway June 20 announced plans to add 50 platform cars to its fleet of 260, and construct a $2.3 million, 4,000-foot yard track at its Toronto terminal to increase capacity on Montreal-to-Toronto and Toronto-to-Detroit Expressway services.
Railroad officials expect to have 20 platforms — converted earlier-generation intermodal cars — online in fall to increase Toronto-to-Detroit capacity and replace equipment scheduled for maintenance; the other 30 platforms would come online by year end or in early 2003.
CPR plans later this year to add the track, which would enable the railroad to simultaneously load and unload more trailers on trains headed to Montreal and Detroit.
"The growth that we're seeing is coming from both new customers coming online and our existing customers further taking advantage of the benefits of our Expressway service," said Expressway Vice President Paul Gilmore in a prepared statement.
Expressway offers trailer-on-train service using articulated, five-platform cars designed for faster, roll-on/roll-off trailer loading and unloading.
