Canton Railroad Co. Oct. 24 reached five consecutive years without a reportable injury. And Nov. 1, the 17-mile short line announced plans to hold a special award ceremony Nov. 24 to honor its employees.

While the railroad has strived to make safety the cornerstone of its customer service commitment — much like most railroads, large and small — Canton Railroad has experienced double-digit growth during its five-year safety streak.

"Concentrating on safety has helped us to create an environment of awareness and professionalism that translates to both service and cost efficiencies," said John Magness, Canton Railroad president and chief executive officer, in a prepared statement.

The short line last year won American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association's Copper Safety Award in the 1-to-50,000 annual man-hours worked category, and in the past received ASLRRA's Jake Award with Distinction for its safety performance.
