EMD signs $500 million contract with Australia's State Rail Authority (May 1993)

The Electro-Motive Division of General Motors has signed a more than $500 million, 15-year pact with the State Rail Authority (SRA) of New South Wales, Australia, for a unique package combining new locomotives with the industry's first overseas application of full-service contract locomotive maintenance.

In partnership with its longstanding Australian licensee Clyde Engineering, EMD will deliver 89 new locomotives to the SRA beginning in early 1994. Thirty-one of the units — the 4,000-horsepower GT46CW model — will be assembled in EMD's London, Ontario, plant. The additional 58 locomotives — the 3,000-horsepower JT42C model — will be built in Australia by Clyde Engineering using major components supplied by EMD's La Grange, Ill., facility. The units will incorporate a 12-cylinder 710G3A engine with a dual-cab configuration.
