On Aug. 27, Burlington Northern Santa Fe hosted a symposium for more than 40 of its "partners" to explain how the railroad's intermodal service can save the companies money and help grow their business.

Those partners were trucking firms: "The public perception is that railroads and trucking companies are competitors, and that's simply not the case," said Steve Branscum, BNSF group vice president, consumer products marketing, in a prepared statement. "When railroads and trucking companies work together, both industries can share the benefits that intermodal transportation has to offer."

During the symposium, attendees toured BNSF's Alliance, Texas, intermodal terminal to better understand the intermodal process from in-gate to out-gate. BNSF also hosted a 90-minute presentation at Texas Motor Speedway to detail its intermodal network and expedited truckload service.

"Our goal was to educate these motor carriers that BNSF can offer them speed, savings and solutions so they will give us an opportunity to give their freight a ride," said Branscum.
