The traffic-generation benefits of increased drilling activities at various U.S. shales has been realized by Farmrail System Inc. Throughout 2011, the railroad’s traffic has in part been driven by energy production in the Anadarko Basin, a large oil and natural gas reserve that covers parts of Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
Now, the railroad is purchasing five more GP-38 locomotives to handle heavier trains of outbound crude oil and inbound frac sand, Farmrail officials said in a news item posted on the regional’s web site.
“The railroad is starting to resemble a ‘pipeline on wheels,’ with multiple input locations for sweep trains assembling traffic destined for domestic refineries,” they said.
