Genesee & Wyoming subsidiary starts-up intermodal service Down Under (6/6/2001)

Genesee & Wyoming Inc.’s (GWI) 50 percent owned subsidiary Australian Railroad Group Pty. Ltd. (ARG) June 6 began offering a weekly intermodal service between Adelaide, South Australia, and Sydney, New South Wales.

Sydney-bound trains would depart Adelaide Wednesday afternoons and arrive in Sydney Friday mornings. ARG’s return service would provide customers a late Friday evening cut-off, enabling shipments to arrive in Adelaide for early Monday-morning collections.

ARG subsidiary Australia Southern Railroad plans to construct an intermodal terminal in Adelaide to better operate the service, as well as other new business, including an Adelaide-to-Darwin line.

"By providing shippers with additional efficient, cost-effective transportation, we plan to further build rail’s marketshare across the Australian continent," said Mortimer Fuller, GWI chairman and chief executive officer, in a prepared statement.

GWI and ARG plan to test a transcontinental arm for their Adelaide-to-Sydney service, which in the near future would offer a through connection to Perth, Western Australia.
