The three hats that Matt Rose has worn as BNSF Railway Co.’s top executive for more than eight years have been reduced to two. Yesterday, the Class I announced it is splitting the president and chief executive officer roles and appointing Carl Ice to the newly created position of president and chief operating officer. Rose will continue to serve as chairman and CEO.

Executive vice president and COO since December 2000, Ice will be responsible for operations, marketing and technology services.

“This change marks the next step in our evolution and will put BNSF in a position to lead the rail industry through the next decade,” said Rose in a prepared statement.

Ice previously served BNSF as senior VP of operations. He began his railroading career with the Santa Fe Railway’s industrial engineering department in 1979, and later held various positions in operations, finance and information systems. Ice’s prior executive posts with the Santa Fe and BNSF include VP of administration, VP-carload business unit, VP-executive, VP and chief mechanical officer, and VP-operations north.
