Mike Haverty has removed one of his three hats at Kansas City Southern. The long-time chairman, president and chief executive officer is passing the presidential reins to Arthur Shoener.

Yesterday, KCS announced it named Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Shoener president and COO, and elected him to the board. Haverty will continue to serve as chairman and CEO.

Shoener will remain head of the Kansas City Southern Railway Co. (KCSR) as president and CEO, as well as oversee Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V. (KCSM) as vice chairman. He also will oversee KCS’ shared services organization — which provides KCSR and KCSM support in purchasing, marketing, human resources, labor relations, information technology and legal activities — and work closely with KCSM President and Executive Representative Jose Zozaya.

Prior to joining KCS in January 2005, Shoener ran his own transportation consulting firm. He previously served Missouri Pacific and Union Pacific railroads in various management positions, including general manager of MP’s eastern region and EVP of UP’s operations.

“Art’s accomplishments and ability in managing day-to-day operations … demonstrate his qualifications to serve as president and to continue to integrate our railroads, both north and south of the border,” said Haverty in a prepared statement.
