It’s now a clean sweep of the seven Class Is for RailPower Technologies Corp. Today, the company announced Norfolk Southern Railway will test a Green Goat® hybrid locomotive for 30 days, beginning in early August.

BNSF Railway Co., Canadian National Railway Co., Canadian Pacific Railway, CSX Transportation, Kansas City Southern and Union Pacific Railroad have already tested, or are testing or purchasing 2,000-horsepower Green Goats.

“It's taken over three years to trial all the Class Is,” said RailPower President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Maier in a prepared statement. “Now, we have five demonstration locomotives, which include two currently being extensively trialed with CSX Transportation.”

Featuring 130-horsepower diesel generators and long-life recyclable batteries, Green Goats are designed to reduce NOx and other emissions 50 percent to 80 percent, and cut fuel usage about 50 percent compared with conventional switchers.

RailPower plans to continue developing Green Goat demonstrations with regionals, short lines and industrial operators. Later this year, the company also expects to begin testing a pre-production branch line/road switcher on various railroads.
