Norfolk Southern Railway has installed a wind turbine at a second yard. On Nov. 13, the Class I finished installing a 50-kilowatt wind turbine at its North Kansas City, Mo., yard to power the facility’s wastewater treatment plant.
Featuring three 24-foot rotor blades mounted on a 100-foot tower, the turbine can generate more than 100,000 kilowatt hours annually. The turbine will produce enough power to offset electricity consumed by the yard wastewater treatment plant’s pumps and controls.
“The wind turbine continues our efforts to promote and incorporate sustainable business practices,” said Chuck Wehrmeister, NS’ vice president of safety and environmental, in a prepared statement. “We will continue to explore renewable energy applications for our facilities throughout our 22-state network.”
Last year, NS installed its first wind turbine at a yard in Bellevue, Ohio. Both turbines were supplied by Entegrity Wind Systems.
