PANYNJ preparing for China's post-virus factory output (4/1/2020)

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) remains fully operational during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has taken steps to pursue enhanced protocols and follow health guidelines to protect frontline personnel, port officials announced yesterday.

As the health crisis evolves, PANYNJ officials have been seeking the expertise of the Council on Port Performance for guidance and planning to identify and address challenges to port efficiency, they reported in the authority's newletter.

Cargo volumes are expected to increase in the coming weeks, as factories in China resume production and output, PANYNJ officials said.

"There will likely be a period of time when cargo supply increases ahead of consumer demand," they said. "The first step is to minimize the supply chain implications by engaging directly with warehouse owners and operators to understand their available capacity and identify excess capacity that can be leveraged."

Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a statement to ensure New York City's critical transportation and delivery workers are not affected by self-quarantine guidelines for traveling out of the region, they said.
