Pacific Harbor Line Inc. (PHL) recently awarded a $21 million contract to MotivePower Inc. to supply 16 environmentally friendly locomotives. Next year, the 85-mile short line plans to take delivery of the remanufactured locomotives, which will be used at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, Calif.
The 14 six-axle and two four-axle locomotives will be equipped with new 2,000-horsepower diesel engines designed to exceed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s “Tier 2” air emission standards. The units also will be equipped with state-of-the-art electronic control equipment supplied by Wabtec Corp. subsidiary Q-Tron. MotivePower — which also is owned by Wabtec — will remanufacture the locomotives at its Boise, Idaho, plant.
PHL will fund half the transaction’s cost with the remainder paid by the ports and South Coast Air Quality Management District.
An Anacostia & Pacific Co. Inc. subsidiary, PHL provides switching services for the ports, and dispatches all BNSF Railway Co. and Union Pacific Railroad trains within the port facilities.
