In July, Pacific Harbor Line Inc. (PHL) plans to test RailPower Technologies Corp.'s Green Goat™ hybrid locomotive in the Los Angeles area.

A subsidiary of Anacostia Rail Holdings Inc., 85-mile PHL provides switching services to customers of the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, and dispatches all Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific Railroad trains within the ports.

"We believe that the Green Goat has the potential to offer a … combination of reduced emissions, noise pollution and overall operating costs," said Anacostia President & Chief Executive Officer Peter Gilbertson in a prepared statement.

Featuring a small diesel generator and long-life batteries, the Green Goat is designed to reduce NOx and diesel-particulate emissions 80 percent to 90 percent, and fuel consumption, about 50 percent, compared with a conventional yard switcher.

On June 30, UP plans to conclude a Green Goat test at its Proviso switch yards in Chicago. The Class I also tested the hybrid locomotive at its Roseville switch yards near Sacramento, Calif.
