With the U.S. beginning bombing missions over Afghanistan Oct. 7, the railroad industry Oct. 8 reacted to additional safety concerns by implementing a self-imposed red-alert status.
In cooperation with top U.S. transportation security officials, Association of American Railroads is helping railroads implement additional operation and protective measures. Railroads now are:
• working closely with Department of Defense to provide support for ongoing U.S. military actions;
• coordinating efforts with rail customers and national security agencies to help balance U.S. economic and security requirements;
• activating a Rail Freight Industry Crisis Center, operating 24/7 to assess railroad security through terrorist experts, monitor developments and coordinate responses with national security agencies;
• increasing patrols and security at critical facilities;
• tightening Internet security, removing some data and severely restricting access to applications tied to the movement of certain materials;
• restricting certain operations near major public events;
• continuing the industry-wide practice of conducting thorough pre-hire background checks; and
• maintaining daily contact with national security agencies and military officials to determine appropriate anti-terrorist responses.
