Ratner Steel to build plant at NS-served Indiana port (3/12/2012)

3/12/2022

Ratner Steel Supply Co. recently announced plans to build a 102,000 square-foot steel facility at the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor.

Construction on the $14.2 million facility is slated to begin this month and conclude in early 2013. Norfolk Southern Railway, the on-site rail-switching provider for the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor, will serve the facility.

The port now is home to 30 companies, including 16 steel-related firms. The port, which offers multi-modal connections, specialized services and foreign-trade zone status, last year handled more than 2 million tons of cargo.

“Ratner will not only benefit from synergies with existing port companies but also from being able to access our railroad, highway and waterway connections, which can significantly reduce transportation costs,” said Ports of Indiana Chief Executive Officer Rich Cooper in a prepared statement.
