The Georgia Ports Authority's (GPA) board recently approved $2 million for a project designed to accommodate more heavy machinery exports at the Port of Savannah's Ocean Terminal.
The project involves high-density paving work at the terminal, which is served by CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Railway, for oversized roll-on/roll-off cargo. The pavement will incorporate roller compacted concrete that's more conducive to heavy traffic and shipping terminal loads, GPA officials said in a prepared statement.
"The project will yield better efficiency and lower long-term maintenance costs by providing a more durable surface for moving and staging these heavy cargos," said GPA Executive Director Curtis Foltz.
In the past four years, the volume of roll-on/roll-off cargo moved though GPA's ports in Savannah and Brunswick has nearly doubled, from 293,265 units in fiscal-year 2009 to 569,984 units in FY2012.
