Third time may be the charm for BNSF, CSX Intermodal (9/25/2001)

For the third time in the past three months, Burlington Northern Santa Fe and CSX Intermodal have teamed up to provide intermodal service.

The Class Is Sept. 20 began offering intermodal service between Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston, and Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. The service is designed to reduce Dallas-to-Ohio Valley transit time from about seven days to three days; Houston-to-Ohio Valley, four days.

"Historically, railroads have focused on providing service to the interchange point," said Steve Branscum, BNSF group vice president, consumer products, in a prepared statement, adding that partnerships are helping BNSF reach beyond its core network.

BNSF currently offers seamless intermodal service between California and the Northeast, Southeast and eastern Canada; CSXI offers transcontinental service between the eastern U.S., and major California and Pacific Northwest markets.

To access New York and New Jersey markets, the two Class Is June 14 expanded BNSF's Ice Cold Express service by running twice-weekly trains between San Bernardino, Calif., and Little Ferry, N.J.

Then Aug. 21, the Class Is formed a haulage agreement to begin a premium intermodal trailer service between Los Angeles and San Bernardino, and Atlanta — enabling BNSF to reduce its Southern California-to-Atlanta transit time by about 12 hours.
