Timmons to lead ASLRRA; Turner to soon begin long-planned retirement (7/29/2002)

American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association's (ASLRRA) board July 25 voted unanimously to name Norfolk Southern Corp. Resident Vice President for Public Affairs Richard Timmons association president.

Timmons, who signed a five-year contract and will assume the position Sept. 3, succeeds Frank Turner, who announced his retirement earlier this year. (Turner intended to leave ASLRRA May 1, but agreed to stay on the job until his successor was named.)

ASLRRA's presidential search took longer than expected because the search committee decided to significantly expand the list of and review candidates with search firm Korn/Ferry International.

Prior to joining NS in 1998, Timmons spent 32 years with the U.S. Army, retiring as a three-star general. He served as chief of staff of the United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command and U.S. Forces in Korea; second in command of the 82nd Airborne Division; commander of the 7th Light Infantry Division and U.S. Army in Panama; and executive officer to two Army secretaries.

"Timmons has been in a position of leadership his entire career and he will be a strong leader for the short-line industry," sais ASLRRA Chairman Walter Rich in a prepared statement.
