Union Pacific, Cargill expand Kansas elevator's capacity (12/18/2012)

Union Pacific Railroad and Cargill announced last week that Cargill's Atchison, Kan., facility now can load 110-car shuttle trains. The elevator previously could accommodate the loading of 75-car shuttles.

Increasing the facility's rail capacity will provide local farmers better access to markets on the West Coast, in the southwestern U.S. and Gulf region, and in Mexico, Cargill officials said in a prepared statement.

"This upgrade will be very good for the area farmers, as the facility will now be able to access additional markets at competitive rates," said Rob Nordmeyer, general manager for Cargill's Twin Rivers Farm Service Group.

Cargill has owned the Atchison facility, which purchases corn, soybeans, wheat and sorghum from local farmers, since 1999.
