In summer, the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad Co. (NOPB) obtained additional rail-car storage capacity after opening its new Kingfish Storage Yard adjacent to the 800-foot-long Huey P. Long Bridge.
Featured in this video, the project involved building five tracks designed to store 205 cars. NOPB also is expanding its yard on France Road in New Orleans to store an additional 240 cars and create space for transloading. The two yard projects present new business development opportunities by keeping stored cars out of the short line’s main classification yards to increase switching capacity, NOPB officials say.
NOPB operates in the nation’s fifth-largest rail gateway as measured by rail-car volume, with 75 miles of track, including 26 miles of mainlines. The short line interchanges with the following six Class Is: BNSF Railway Co., CN, CSX, Kansas City Southern, Norfolk Southern Railway and Union Pacific Railroad.
