Video: Port Saint John expansion poses traffic growth potential for CP

Underway for the past few years, Port Saint John’s more than $200 million west side modernization project might mean more container traffic for Canadian Pacific. The Class I accesses the New Brunswick port via connections with Eastern Maine Railway Co. Ltd. and the New Brunswick Southern Railway. To be completed in 2023, the project involves a new wharf, terminal and rail link upgrades, and the deepening of the channel. The work will double the port’s annual throughput capacity from 150,000 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to 300,000 TEUs, and enable capacity to eventually grow to 800,000 TEUs over the long term. A longer and stronger pier, deeper berth and wider channel will boost capacity and accommodate larger vessels, CP officials say. As a result, the railroad expects to offer a broader and more efficient intermodal service offering at the port.
