Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) recently purchased six miles of right of way from Norfolk Southern Railway for its South Corridor Light Rail Line.

The $14.75 million transaction will enable CATS to implement light-rail service from Interstate 485 near Pineville, N.C., to 7th Street in uptown Charlotte, N.C. The agency now has purchased 56 percent of the property needed to build the line.

CATS and NS will operate independently on the same corridor, which will be used for light rail only from uptown Charlotte to Woodlawn Road. Freight and passenger trains will operate side-by-side on separate tracks from Woodlawn Road to I-485. The 15-station South Corridor Light Rail project is designed to run south from uptown Charlotte to I-485.

CATS now plans to begin final design plans for the system.
