BART to raise fares Jan. 1

advertisement

On Jan. 1, San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) will increase fares 10 percent.

During the past several years, the agency’s cumulative fare growth has been less than the rate of inflation, according to a prepared statement. The fare increase is necessary because of rising energy and health-care costs.

During the past eight years, BART has used fare revenue to help pay for new ticket vending machines, elevators and escalators, and renovated cars.
