On Feb. 28, Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas (METRO) officials will hold an open house to discuss the first extension of the authority’s 7.5-mile starter light-rail system, which opened Jan. 1.

The system currently travels between the University of Houston-Downtown to south of Reliant Park. The proposed 5.4-mile extension would travel between downtown and Northline Mall.

Construction of the segment is expected to begin in mid-2006 and be completed in 2008.

METRO’s light-rail expansion was approved by Houston-area voters last November.
