Yesterday, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) approved a $770.7 million operating and capital budget for fiscal-year 2006, which begins July 1.

The $323.5 million operating budget includes funds to implement customer service and security initiatives, and operate the recently opened Armour Yard Rail Services Facility.

The $447.2 million capital budget includes funds to implement an automated fare collection system, and rehabilitate 48 track miles and 228 passenger cars.

During the budget process, MARTA officials considered implementing a fare increase, but instead decided to raise fares in mid-2006, when the authority installs a fare-collection system.
