U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded two grants totaling $2 million to the University of South Florida’s Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR). The grants will be used to provide transit industry education, research and technology transfer.

Research is expected to help increase ridership, identify methods to attract and retain future transit workers, and improve passenger and operator safety and security, and service efficiency.

"The practical and relevant research coming out of CUTR will lead to cost effective, common sense transit solutions for communities around the country," said Federal Transit Administrator Jennifer Dorn in a prepared statement.

A $1.8 million grant will help support University Transportation Centers’ fiscal year 2002 and 2003 program funding, stipulated in Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century. A $248,375 grant will help fund the National Bus Rapid Transit Institute.
