Increased police staffing and investment, and cooperation with other law enforcement agencies has helped the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) decrease crimes committed at its facilities 44.8 percent since 2001.

The authority has spent more than $300 million to enhance security during the past few years, and currently is implementing a $500 million capital plan to further reinforce security systems.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, PANYNJ has hired more than 500 additional law enforcement officers. And in March 2003, the authority established an anti-crime hotline for citizens to report suspicious activity in and around the authority’s facilities.

PANYNJ has decreased criminal activity at Port Authority Trans-Hudson rail stations, bus terminals, ports, airports, tunnels and bridges.
