Portland's TriMet receives federal funds for new line

Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) recently obtained a $39.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) for its new Interstate Metropolitan Area Express Yellow Line, which opened May 1 under budget and ahead of schedule.

The 5.8-mile, 10-station line connects two of the city’s fastest growing business and entertainment centers — the Rose Quarter and Exposition Center.

USDOT now has provided $178.7 million for the project. TriMet is using the funds to purchase light-rail vehicles, traction power equipment and train control signals; build a maintenance facility; complete final design; and acquire property.
