Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority recently awarded a $600.4 million contract to Eastside LRT Constructors to design and build a six-mile extension of the Metro Gold Line, which opened last summer.

Comprised of Washington Group International, Obayashi Inc. and Shimmick Construction Co., the joint venture will begin construction in early August.

To be built between Union Station in downtown L.A. and Pomona Boulevard, the Eastside extension will include four miles of above ground track and two miles in tunnels. The project also includes building eight stations — two underground — and installing the overhead catenary system, and signaling and communications systems.

The project is expected to be completed in 2009.

Washington Group also was part of the joint venture that designed and built the 13.7-mile Union Station-to-Pasadena Gold Line.
