The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has granted $5.2 million to five states to improve grade crossings as part of a program to enhance safety and prepare federally designated corridors for future high-speed rail service.

Oklahoma will receive about $1.6 million to upgrade five Burlington Northern Santa Fe crossings in Tulsa’s central business district by installing barrier medians and four-quadrant gates. The line is part of the South Central Corridor connecting Tulsa with Oklahoma City, and Dallas/Fort Worth and San Antonio, Texas.

Alabama will receive about $1.2 million to grade separate CSX Transportation tracks in Mobile. The line is part of the Gulf Coast Corridor connecting Mobile to New Orleans and Houston.

USDOT also granted about $1 million to South Carolina to upgrade one Norfolk Southern Railway and two CSXT crossings in Columbia by installing new track circuitry, lights and gates. The line is part of the Southeast Corridor connecting Columbia with Richmond, Va., and Washington, D.C.

Washington will receive $994,100 to improve several BNSF crossings by installing new track circuitry in Mt. Vernon; conducting studies to determine the feasibility of closing a street in Seattle; developing a plan to close or improve 15 private crossings between Stanwood and Mt. Vernon; and constructing a pedestrian crossing in Kelso, and a pedestrian underpass near the BNSF White River Trestle and East Valley Highway in Auburn. The line is part of the Pacific Northwest corridor connecting Seattle with Portland, Ore., and Vancouver, British Columbia.

Finally, Wisconsin will receive $372,800 to upgrade nine Canadian Pacific Railway crossings with new track circuitry, lights and gates in seven counties. The line is part of the Chicago Hub corridor connecting Milwaukee with Chicago and Minneapolis/St. Paul.
