WMATA sets dates for station, extension openings

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) officials recently announced plans to open the New York Avenue-Florida Avenue-Gallaudet U Metrorail station on Nov. 20 — one month ahead of schedule.
Located on the Red Line between Union Station and Rhode Island Avenue, the $103.7 million station will have two entrances, elevators, and enhanced signage and lighting. WMATA’s first in-fill station, the facility increases the total number of system-wide stations to 84.
The project — which began in December 2000 — is funded by the District of Columbia, federal government and a special assessment implemented for area private land owners and local businesses.
During its first year of service, the station is expected to serve 6,600 passengers.
The authority also set a Dec. 18 opening for the Blue Line extension from Addison Road to Largo Town Center. The 3.1-mile extension will include an intermediary station at Morgan Boulevard with 500 parking spaces and a child care facility. The Largo Town Center station will include a 2,200-space parking structure.
WMATA broke ground on the $456 million project — the first extension to the authority’s 103-mile regional system — in May 2001.
