New York/New Jersey port authority green lights $2 billion World Trade Center Transportation hub project

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) board recently approved plans to proceed with the World Trade Center Transportation Hub project.

The $2.2 billion project is designed to reconnect and expand links between the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) rail system, downtown subway lines and the World Financial Center Ferry Terminal.

PANYNJ will break ground on the hub Sept. 6. Initial site preparation work includes constructing a temporary track west of the existing temporary PATH station, enabling the authority to continue operating rail service during construction.

Scheduled to open in 2009, the hub is expected to serve more than 80,000 PATH passengers daily.
