Alaska Railroad seeks public comments on Wasilla project's environmental report

Tomorrow, Alaska Railroad Corp. (ARRC) will conduct a public meeting in Wasilla to discuss an environmental assessment of the South Wasilla track realignment project.

The railroad plans to straighten four miles of mainline track in southeast Wasilla. The new alignment would eliminate five grade crossings, reduce derailment risks, and enable freight and passenger trains to increase speeds. In addition, the alignment would enable ARRC to provide commuter-rail service between Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley.

ARRC will accept public comments on the assessment — which describes proposed alternatives, and assesses potential environmental, social and economic impacts — until Nov. 2.
