Sacramento RT posts record monthly ridership

Despite raising fares, the Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) carried more than 3 million passengers in September — the agency’s highest-ever monthly ridership and a 6 percent rise compared with September 2004.

Light-rail ridership also hit an all-time high at 58,000 passengers, a 23 percent increase compared with September 2004.

Agency officials attribute the increases to skyrocketing gas prices. But there’s another reason officials expect ridership to continue rising. Last weekend, the agency opened a 7.4-mile light-rail extension to downtown Folsom, Calif., which will attract another 4,000 passengers daily.
