BART increases rush hour train length to handle ridership spike

Bay Area Rapid Transit’s (BART) 2006 ridership already is growing faster than agency planners anticipated. So, the agency is adding more cars to rush hour trains that serve stations in San Francisco and Oakland.

Between Feb. 1 and Feb. 16, BART posted average weekday ridership of 326,500 passengers — about 16,500 more passengers compared with the same 2005 period and 11,000 more than planners forecasted when they budgeted for FY2006.

Agency officials attribute the increase to highway congestion and high gasoline prices.
