WMATA, Virginia transportation department seek feedback on Dulles airport extension

Tomorrow, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) and Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) will hold a public hearing on a environmental assessment and proposed changes to the Dulles Corridor Metrorail project.

The Federal Transit Administration approved the extension alignment last spring, but WMATA and DRPT have made several design changes since, such as moving track into the median of Route 7 and shortening a tunnel in Tysons Corner.

Under the project’s first phase, WMATA’s subway system will be extended 11 miles from East Falls Church to Reston, Va. The entire project would extend Metrorail service 23 miles to Washington Dulles International Airport.
